〈스키조필룸 코뮤네의 2만 3천 개의 성과 그 외의 이야기들〉은 홍콩 M+ 미술관의 의뢰로 제작된 디지털 프로젝트를 확장한 영상 작업입니다.

이 영상은 정 말러가 란타우 섬의 다양한 균류를 연구한 데이터를 맞춤형 인공지능 모델에 입력해 생성한 결과를 바탕으로 구성되었습니다. 여기에 작가 렌 라이와 영화감독 스탠 브라키지의 작업에서 영감을 받은 전통 16mm 필름의 역동적인 이미지 감각을 불러일으키는 애니메이션 프롬프트가 더해졌습니다.

오랜 협업자 존 바틀리가 작곡한 음악은 빠르게 성장하고, 부패하며, 춤추고, 뒤틀리는 버섯 이미지에 생동감을 부여합니다.

각 버섯은 하나의 ‘장’으로 구성되어 영상과 설명 텍스트(웹사이트 lantaufungi.world에서 확인 가능)가 함께 제시되며, 이는 돌봄과 경이로움의 이야기로 확장됩니다. 이러한 서사는 균류를 독성이나 기생성 여부로 구분하는 기존의 분류학적 접근을 전복하며 새로운 시각을 제안합니다.

The Twenty-Three Thousand Sexes of Schizophyllum Commune and Other Stories is an expanded video of a new digital project originally commissioned by M+ museum. The video comprises Zheng Mahler’s research into the various Lantau species of fungi as fed into a custom AI model, supplemented with animation prompts that evoke the pulsing, energetic sequences of traditional 16mm film, in particular the work of artist Len Lye and filmmaker Stan Brakhage. An accompanying musical composition by longtime collaborator John Bartley provides the soundtrack to these rapidly growing, decaying, dancing, and twisting mushrooms. Envisioned as chapters, each mushroom’s video and descriptive text (found online at lantaufungi.world) is presented as a story of care and wonder, subverting the typical taxonomic descriptions of fungi with relation to their poison or parasitic categorization.
